A team-level role embedded in a larger whole
In SAFe, the Scrum Master retains all their classic responsibilities within their team: facilitating Scrum events, coaching the team toward self-organization, and removing impediments that hinder its progress. But their scope naturally expands, since their team is now part of an Agile Release Train comprising several other teams.
This broader context implies much more frequent coordination with the other Scrum Masters on the ART, particularly to manage cross-team dependencies that did not exist in an isolated Scrum context.
Actively participating in PI Planning
PI Planning is SAFe's most emblematic event: it brings all ART teams together to collaboratively plan the next Program Increment. The Scrum Master plays a central role by facilitating breakout sessions where their team defines its PI Objectives, identifies dependencies, and assesses risks using the ROAM technique.
They must also help their team accurately represent its work capacity on the Program Board, so that cross-team dependencies are visible to everyone from the start of the PI.
The Scrum of Scrums and cross-team coordination
In addition to their team's Daily Scrum, the Scrum Master typically participates in the Scrum of Scrums, a regular event bringing together representatives from each ART team to identify and resolve dependencies and impediments at the Program level, facilitated by the Release Train Engineer.
This format allows blockers that go beyond a single team's scope to be surfaced quickly, without waiting for the end-of-PI Inspect and Adapt to address them.
Scrum Master and Release Train Engineer: a close collaboration
The Release Train Engineer (RTE) is often described as a 'Scrum Master for the ART': they facilitate Program-level events and help teams deliver value, exactly as the Scrum Master does at the team level. The two roles collaborate closely, with no hierarchical relationship between them.
An experienced Scrum Master in a SAFe context naturally develops skills transferable to a future RTE role, making this a common career progression for Agile practitioners in large organizations.

The SAFe® Scrum Master (SSM) certification validates your ability to facilitate the Scrum Master role within an Agile Release Train, covering both Lean-Agile fundamentals and practices specific to coordination at scale, such as PI Planning and the Scrum of Scrums.
