PSM I: the essential foundation
The Professional Scrum Master™ I certification assesses your understanding of the Scrum framework as described in the Scrum Guide: the roles, events, artifacts, and values. The exam consists of multiple-choice questions covering real-world situations that test your ability to apply the theory rather than merely recite it.
PSM I is aimed at anyone starting out in a Scrum Master role, but also at Developers, Product Owners, or managers wanting to validate a rigorous understanding of Scrum, regardless of their job title.
PSM II: mastering servant leadership
PSM II goes further by assessing your ability to apply coaching and facilitation techniques in complex situations: how to handle a conflict within the team, how to support an inexperienced Product Owner, or how to deal with an organization resisting agile change.
This certification generally assumes hands-on experience as a Scrum Master, or at least deep reflection on the challenges faced daily in this role. Questions are often framed as open-ended scenarios, where several answers may seem plausible but only one best reflects the spirit of Scrum.
Which certification for which profile?
If you're new to agility or to the Scrum Master role, PSM I is the logical starting point. It gives you a solid theoretical foundation, recognized by recruiters, with no prior experience required.
If you've already been in this role for several months or years and want to validate a finer mastery of team coaching, PSM II is the natural choice. It's not mandatory to hold PSM I before taking PSM II, but it remains strongly recommended to ensure you have all the necessary foundations.
A preparation tip for both exams
Whatever level you're aiming for, the best preparation remains practicing exam-style questions under conditions close to the real thing, combined with a careful re-read of the Scrum Guide.
